Gone are the days when bare copper wires were acceptable. While copper wires are very effective, they still need to be insulated to maintain that effectiveness regardless of their use. Think of wire and cable insulation as the roof of your house, and while it may not seem like much, it protects all the valuables inside, so it’s time to learn the difference between the various wire insulators. It’s important to know which materials are used in each type of insulator and which applications they are best suited for.
High molecular weight polyethylene, is the most commonly used thermoplastic wire insulation for anode protection. Ideally, high molecular weight insulation is suitable for direct burial applications. With its high molecular weight content, this cable insulation is able to resist crushing, abrasion, disfigurement, etc. caused by the large amount of weight and pressure. The polyethylene coating provides strength and flexibility, which means the insulation can take a lot of abuse without damaging the actual cable. Commonly used for pipelines, storage tanks, underwater cables, etc…
Cross-linked polyethylene insulation is one of the most versatile options on the market.XLPE insulation is resistant to most of the chemicals involved in the cable industry, works in both high and low temperatures, is waterproof, and allows internal cables to transmit and receive large amounts of voltage. As a result, insulators like XLPE are popular in the heating and cooling industry, water piping and systems, and any application that requires a high voltage system. Best of all XLPE insulators are less expensive compared to most wire and cable insulators.
High density polyethylene insulation claims to be the toughest and strongest form of cable insulation. HDPE insulation isn’t as flexible as other insulation, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be useful when placed in the right application. In fact, cable installations, conduits, and many other applications require non-flexible insulation. High-density insulation is non-corrosive and very UV-resistant, which means it’s perfect for linear outdoor use.
